"Rule your mind or it will rule you" as said by a brilliant roman poet named Horace. I can not stress enough the power of the mind and ruling it via meditation. I've talked about it in a recent post and this brought to me to the Netflix show called the mind explained. The mind explained by Netflix and Vox is a mini-series that talked about well the mind and different aspects too it. There were 2 episodes in which I'd like to share with you guys. First is about my favorite topic meditation under one episode called Mindfulness and the other talked about memory.
Upon watching the first episode (twice) called Mindfulness. Yungey Mingyur Riponche a Buddhist monk talks about meditation.
What I got from my buddy Yungey was that meditating :
SATIPATTHANA: To keep your attention inside
With all types of distractions especially in the digital age multi-tasking is a common norm for us to do and that ain't right and we don't even know it. Truthfully peoples attention span is low and is getting lower. Through meditating and being able to focus in the mind helps us be focus outside the mind and our everyday life. Can you just eat without checking your phone or watching the TV? Or talking to someone in person and not checking your phone? With meditation you could do one thing for a prolonged moment of time and being able to focus at one thing is one major skill that I believe will help you in life.
Helps us with our emotions.
I constantly find myself in a cycle of doubting myself and fearing for the future but I never bothered about thinking of the present. Usually what gives us anxiety is thinking about the haunting experiences or past feelings that is filled with regret, wrong decisions , what I could've should've didn't do and all the 'ves, as well as the future, with what will I do with my life and so on. This is what the buddhist calls the "Monkey Mind". However, with meditation my main man Yungey explains how instead of thinking about those things what about focusing on the things that will matter now and that mattered to me :o. Noticing the things that you can control. Making and choosing the right decision and doing that action right now that you think will help you to be a better you in the future. Be present and focus on the now (which all self-help books talk about).
Makes us friends with our emotions.
Having to talk about the future and the past Yungey my main man explains that instead of what he advised like being present, he thoroughly explains how you should be friends with your struggling and difficult emotions. I know it sounds a bit of a daunting task but he has a point. Being able to note and understand these emotions help you manage them. Being able to say I understand where this emotion came from or where this fear came guides you in calming the mind. In his words " You don't need to fight" or "You don't need to surrender to your problems" but "Make friends". Understanding and having that collective mindset helps you adjust to any difficult struggles or problems you have in any area of life.
To sum it all up meditation is something you can do easily but yet soo impacting in your life. The idea of you being able to be more present and choose the things that you think that will be important to your life or understanding the distraction around you can help you in the long run. All the scientific facts and brain stuff are in the video which I hope will motivate you to start your journey as a mediator.
Memory
An ability wherein human has to dig deep to remember a certain experience or event. However, not all memories are accurate and depict well as you think you would. In this episode netflix and Vox travel deep inside the mind and explain how memories work and its different capabilities.
A former memory champion (yes thats a thing ) explains how meditation and basic needs such as eating, sleeping well contributed in helping her win the championship. She was asked to memorize around 300 numbers in random sequences and she was able to do it. How? Through creating a narrative she was able to represent those numbers that enabled her to memorize the numbers. Story, emotion and places are foundations of our memory according to Emma Watson (The narrator). If we are able to relate any of these to a certain memory we are able to retrieve this easily. That is all. God Bless.
